Clash Magazine

February 2008

La’s and Cast devotees back off, this third solo instalment from John
Power shoe slaps and clashes over the rough edges of Britpop with
muddy-boot bass lines and banjo jangles that reek of Captain Beefheart. A somewhat natural progression from 2006’s  Willow She Weeps, Power’s simple stories of life and love begins with soulful opener. While Ain’t No Woman that rattles from spiteful allegations to sweet Everly Brother harmonies.

It’s a relatively rootsy record; that is, until Power’s heart
rips from a departing love,  “Don’t say it’s all over, don’t say it’s
goodbye, the thought of me loosing you, blackens my mind he sobs in
Distant Eyes?.

My, he has the blues, but for the most part it’s
steel-stringed brilliance. Though almost prematurely, you’re waltzed gently into the realisation that the album’s over, perhaps, even before it begun, with (end track) “Come The Morning”. Stormbreaker; a short yet painfully sincere listen.

Beefheart, Magic, Redemption and Rock & Roll Steinbeck

24.09.07

Imagine a day that found the Crickets, Captain Beefhearts Magic Band and Elvis’ Sun Band all together in a John Steinbeck’s bunkhouse, this is that sound.

The record “Stormbreaker” is to be released on December 10th 2007 - the sound of the Crickets, Sun records, Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band all locked up in a John Steinbeck novel.

In anticipation of a great dirty Beefheart bass, Rock & Roll LP, John Power steps forth to
hit his guitar singing songs of redemption and Rock & Roll.  Weeping and a moaning, rocking and a rolling.  Come and hear John, Jay Lewis and Mr Pilgrim get to grips with some great new tunes, the like not heard since Elvis walked outta Sun and Buddy took his last flight
